Developed in 1995, the Citizens Academy was developed to provide the community a better understanding of the nature and responsibility of police work. The department holds two academy classes annually, each training 22-24 students. Participants attend twelve weekly training sessions encompassing all aspects of police duties. Instruction includes, but is not limited to, training in firearms; defensive driving; building searches; defensive tactics; and vice investigations. Sioux City Police officers provide students the opportunity to perform many different police functions in a controlled environment using "hands-on" instruction. In addition, students spend time in the Communications Center and with officers on the street directly observing the dispatch and call response functions. The program is extremely popular and has graduated nearly 500 students since its inception. For more information about the Citizens Academy, contact Lt. Pat McCann at 712-279-6390.
