Twenty kids from Sioux City were given the opportunity to experience the joy of giving on December 17 when they were taken shopping with police officers. Walmart, the Sioux City Police Department, and the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office once again partnered for Shop with a Cop. Each kid was given a $100 gift card to Walmart to buy presents for their families.
“We really enjoy seeing the excitement in their faces as they select presents for their families,” said Officer Jeremy McClure, Crime Prevention Officer for the SCPD.
The kids were selected to participate in the program based on their demonstration of citizenship characteristics at school.
“We go to the schools and ask them to nominate kids that show respect and deserve to be rewarded,” explained McClure.
Walmart provided the funds to buy the gifts cards through a grant that the SCPD applied for. They have hosted and funded this event for over 5 years.
For the last two years, each child selected for the event walked away with a little something extra, a new bike. The bikes were purchased by the generosity of the Varity Club.
“The bikes have really added to the excitement of this event,” McClure said. |
